S5830XWKS2 Android 2 3 5 Firmware Update for Samsung Galaxy Ace Stock ROM

The Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread just recently hits on Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 users over Netherlands. The firmware build number is S5830XWKS2, this has a XEN CSC file for Dutch- S5830XENKS1 and a build date of September 17, 2011. This is the first Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread build that has been released for Samsung Galaxy Ace and slowly being pushed worldwide. Some improvements and new features of Android 2.3.5 were added on this version such as flashing of touch buttons, overscroll glow effect, more convenient and faster than the previous releases and any other bug fixes and issues were too early to tell.

Just did some testing. Wifi signal full, incoming calls dont get dropped, all show up on call logs, no force closes. I havent tried restoring apps or data, and havent tried the deodexer yet but this is going REALLY well.

The anatomy of an OtterBox case

I was never big on cellphone case. They may the phone bigger and bulkier. But back in 2005 I "dropped" my Nokia 6600 smartphone on the pavement, destroying the casing. The internals were not damage, and a new case was all that was needed. I considered this a freak accident because I had left my cellphone on my lap while getting out of my car. Two years later, I had my Nokia E61i on a belt holster, and accidentally slammed it into a door knob which damaged the case. After that I change my mind on the need for a protective case for a mobile phone.

With the increased utility of todays mobile phones getting the some protection is more important. As the amount of time we spend with our mobile phones increase the chance of having an accident resulting in damage to our devices increase.

One type of protection are the thin "Invisible Shields" that are really thin layers of plastic, similar to screen protectors. The advantage of these is they add almost no weight or bulk to the phone.  These protect your phone from scratches but not from impact.

Plastic crystal and aluminum cases, are also primarily intended to protect your phone from scratches and do provide some protection in case you drop your phone. Since these cases are made of hard plastic the full force of the impact is still transfer to your phone.

Better protection can be had from silicone, rubber, leather and soft plastic cases.  These cases shield your phone from scratches and absorb or dampen some of the impact from a fall. Generally, the softer and thicker the silicone is, the better it is a dampening shock damage. A very soft silicone or rubber case would itself get easily scratch or torn, and may actually allow sharp or pointed objects to easily penetrate the case. OtterBox has several solutions problem.

OtterBox Impact series is looks like your basic silicone case but the inside of the case is "cored". Basically a series of holes are molded into the inner side of the case, resulting in a fairly hard and durable silicone case exterior with a softer skeletal like interior. The inside is effectively softer by taking aways lateral support from the silicone in the interior of the case. This will provide a greater degree of shock protection to your phone than the typical silicone case.

A second solution employed by OtterBox is to provide a two piece case with a very soft piece of silicone to wrap the phone and placing a hard polycarbonate shell which snaps onto the soft silicone case. It results in hard outer shell with a soft shock absorbing interior. This is the technology employed in OtterBoxs Commuter and Defender cases, the latter being the larger more protective case. 

I have used two of these cases, a pair of Commuters, one on a HTC HD2 and the other on a HTC Desire HD. I have to find a case which I feel will provide a greater degree of shock protection in case of a drop.

The newest technological innovation from OtterBox is their Reflex series. This is a probably the most innovative OtterBox design which is silicone case with a hollow interior, surrounding your phone with an air cushion. On impact, the Reflex cases "flexes" absorbing the shock and returns to its original form back. The design principal is pretty much follows the principal of a car tire. 

Whichever series you opt for OtterBox has clearly applied the most to discovering new innovative technology to protect your mobile device.

Over the past few days has heard of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Lite , but this is not the only device that is working on a new tablet , which would be called Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 . Today has appeared a mysterious model on a website called Zauba India that makes us think it might be this new tablet.



The model in question is the SM- T331 and based on it we can come to the conclusion that you can try a new model that belong to the series of the Galaxy Tab , and remember that the Galaxy Tab 8.0 features three model numbers SM- T310 SM - T311 and SM- T315 . Moreover, beside the SM- T331 model has also been leaked that would price the device, which would be $ 550, which suggests a high-end tablet , or at least a higher range than the current Galaxy Tab.

The fact that the SM- T331 may correspond to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 and it can be a higher current to the Galaxy Tab range market model begs the possibility that the new tablet from the South Korean company is accompanied by a screen Super AMOLED .

July 2011 Android smartphone buyers Guide Budget droids with HVGA screens

Since it release, the best budget Android phone in the market has been the LG Optimus One. As competition arrived, the prices of the Optimus One adjusted with the market, and more than six months after it was released, it is still the best budget Android. It is now selling for as low as Php9,800 with an official one year LG warranty.

The Optimus One has a 320 x 480 (HVGA) pixel resolution, which is improtant since this was the original Android reference screen resolution, which means good app compatibility.  The 3.2 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display is big enough and the 600MHz processor and 512MB of RAM make this phone fast enough. It runs Froyo (Android) 2.2, which is good enough even if not updated (and an update to 2.3 is promised). This allows you to install apps on the SD card making the low internal storage of budget phones less of an issue.

 

When the price went below 10K, we stopped recommending the 240 x 320 screen resolution budget offerings which we had been recommending. The 320 x 480 is well worth the additional 1-2K.

But our favorite budget Droid now faces some serious competition.

Cherry Mobile Cosmo. Get past the Cherry branding. Cherry is an ODM which sells phones manufactured by third parties under their own brand name. The Cherry Mobile Cosmo is actually a Spice Mi-310. These are the official Cherry Mobile Cosmo specifications:

• Android 2.2 (Froyo)
• Qualcomm MSM 7227 600Mhz
• 3.2" HVGA Capacitive Touchscreen
• ROM: 512MB / RAM: 256MB
• Dual Band GSM / GPRS / EDGE
• WCDMA / HSDPA
• 2MP Camera
• Portable Wifi Hotspot
• WIFI / Bluetooth / 3G / GPS
• FM Radio
• Standard Micro USB 2.0
• 3.5mm Stereo Audio Jack
• Expandable Memory up to 16GB

Priced a Php6,900 is has similar specifications to the Optimus One and is a very good alternative.  It is not as good as the Optimus One coming with only half the RAM, a smaller battery (1300 mAh instead of 1500 mAh) and a lower specification camera. It also apparently cannot handle 32GB MicroSD Cards, being limited to 16GB. But it is priced Php2,900 lower, roughly about 33% less.

Alcatel OT-990. Another new offering is the Alcatel OT-990. Specifications are similar to the Cosmo, but it comes with a larger 3.5-inch screen, a 5MP auto focus camera and can handle 32GB MicroSD cards. Price is supposed to be about Php10K. Basically, the OT-990 will have a larger screen and higher MP camera, with the Optimus One having more RAM and a larger battery.

At this price Optimus One looks like better tried and tested choice, but a 3.5-inch screen 320 x 480 screen is a big plus factor. That is the screen size and resolution is that of an Apple iPhone 3GS. 

Others. You also have two offering from Torque, dual sim Androids at Php7,999 at Php9,999... but those are honest to goodness "China phones" manufactured by companies who we cannot identify. One is a know-off of an HTC, the other a iPhone 4 look-a-like (down to the buttons). We will hold off on recommending these for now until we find out more about them.

The choice is yours, but it is great to have choices.

Update: The Alcatel OT-990 is available for Php9,999, but that is a temporary promotional price. The regular price is Php14,999, which is much higher than the Samsung Galaxy Ace which has better specs.

Its been quite a while since Ive posted on my blog, so sorry about that :) - got crazy busy the last few weeks, we took a week long holiday, and clients always see that as a big catastrophe, and starts sending lots and lots of work our way!

Stock ROM Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 S5830XWKPO and S5830BOKP5 Android 2 3 3 Gingerbread

Two stock ROMs for Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 Android phones are now available on samfirmware.com, the S5830XWKPO and S5830BOKP5. Both version are Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread with build date of July 2011. We arent get any detailed info of which and what specific regions these firmwares allegedly came from, so we check it out over samfirmware SAMFIT tool and heres what information we got.

S5830XWKPO - A Europe version with CSC file LUXKP1 for Rogers- Canada but this one is confirmed for Luxemburg.

S5830BOKP5 - A Europe version with CSC file TNL for T-Mobile - Germany.

Anyone in San Diego making it as a freelancer

Hey Dustin,
Why do you think clients feel that remote workers are less

attractive? I get that a lot too and would be glad to hear different
points of view. Between Skype, SVN, Basecamp and other online tools;
working remote works great, but some (most?) clients wont go for it
and Im trying to understand/figure out why. Even with the option of
being onsite for project kick-off, I still see a real aversion.
Although I do work with one firm where pretty much everything is done
in a remote fashion, PM on the West Coast, developers North East, UI
guys South East and think work very smoothly as long everyone is
professional.
